Trivia Question❓

What pharmaceutical company, founded in Kalamazoo in 1886 and once one of the largest drug makers in the world, had its global headquarters there until being acquired by Pfizer in 2003?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Think about the last time a shop owner greeted you by name, or a hardware store employee walked you directly to what you needed.

These quiet, locally owned businesses rarely make headlines — but they're the heartbeat of communities like Kalamazoo, Portage, and Three Rivers.

Across Southwest Michigan, independent business owners work six or seven days a week, sponsor youth sports, hire local students, and donate to school fundraisers.

Their success is our community's success.

What sets them apart isn't price or convenience — it's relationships.

You can order almost anything online, but you can't order twenty years of expertise, a familiar smile, or a genuine "How's your family doing?"

Every dollar spent locally helps keep a dream alive, fills a storefront, and preserves what makes this region feel like home.

This week, step into a small business you've never visited — because the person behind the counter might just be quietly holding this community together.

Some of the best local destinations are the ones we've driven past a hundred times but never actually stopped to explore.

Around Kalamazoo and Portage, a handful of hidden gems are hiding in plain sight — quietly waiting for a visit that never quite happens.

The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts offers rotating exhibits and Michigan art that surprises even non-art lovers.

The Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery gives families an unexpectedly fun look at how Michigan stocks its lakes and streams.

At Celery Flats, beyond the familiar walking trails, an interpretive center tells the story of Portage's celery-farming roots.

Kleinstuck Preserve offers wooded trails and wetlands just minutes from busy city streets.

Even the Air Zoo — well known but rarely revisited — has evolved enough to be worth rediscovering as an adult.

The best adventures aren't always far from home. Sometimes they're just around the corner, waiting for you to finally pull in.

Sometimes you don't need a full vacation — you just need thirty minutes.

Living in the Kalamazoo and Portage area means a genuine escape is never far away.

A walk through Al Sabo Preserve or Asylum Lake Preserve can quietly reset your mood in under an hour.

If water helps you unwind, spots like Ramona Park, Austin Lake, or West Lake offer the kind of view that makes you breathe a little deeper.

Not an outdoors person? A local greenhouse or bookstore works just as well. Even a short drive toward Vicksburg, Richland, or Mattawan puts quiet roads and open fields right in front of you.

The real challenge isn't finding the place — it's giving yourself permission to go.

Small breaks won't solve everything, but they can absolutely change the tone of your day. Sometimes, that's more than enough.

Worth the Drive: Whiskey Thief Brings a Fresh Vibe to Richland

One of my favorite things about putting together KP Vibe is discovering places that make me think, "Why haven't I been there yet?"

Whiskey Thief in Richland is one of those places.

If you haven't spent much time in Richland recently, you might be surprised by how much the village has evolved over the past few years. While it still has the small-town charm people love, it's also quietly becoming a destination for dining, local events, and an evening out.

Whiskey Thief is part of that transformation.

The first thing you'll notice isn't necessarily the menu.

It's the atmosphere.

Warm wood finishes, comfortable seating, and a welcoming space create the kind of environment where people naturally settle in for conversation. Whether you're meeting friends after work, enjoying a date night, or simply looking for somewhere different to spend an evening, it feels relaxed without trying too hard.

The name may suggest it's all about whiskey—and if you're a whiskey enthusiast, you'll certainly find plenty to appreciate—but don't let the name fool you.

The restaurant offers a full menu that goes well beyond the bar. From burgers and sandwiches to elevated comfort food and shareable appetizers, the focus is on approachable dishes that pair well with good company. It's the kind of place where everyone in your group can usually find something they'll enjoy.

What I appreciate most is how businesses like this help strengthen smaller communities.

When a locally owned restaurant opens in a village like Richland, it's about more than adding another place to eat.

It creates a gathering place.

Friends meet after work.

Neighbors catch up over dinner.

Visitors discover a community they may never have explored otherwise.

That's good for everyone.

One of the themes we've been talking about a lot in KP Vibe lately is rediscovering the places around us.

We often think we need to drive hours for a memorable afternoon or evening.

The reality is that some of the best experiences are sitting just twenty or thirty minutes away.

Whiskey Thief is a perfect example.

Pair dinner with a walk around Gull Lake, a stop at the Richland Farmers Market when it's in season, or simply a scenic drive through the countryside, and you've created a relaxing local getaway without spending the entire day in the car.

Sometimes that's all we really need.

So if you've been looking for an excuse to explore somewhere a little different this summer, consider pointing the car toward Richland.

You may discover that one of Southwest Michigan's newest favorite gathering places has been waiting there all along.
