Five Places You've Probably Driven Past Hundreds of Times

Have you ever driven past a place so many times that it almost becomes invisible?

You know it's there.

You've glanced at it through the windshield dozens—maybe hundreds—of times.

You may have even told yourself, "I should stop there someday."

But somehow, someday never arrives.

I think all of us have places like that around Kalamazoo and Portage.

We're creatures of habit. We drive the same routes to work, stop at the same grocery stores, eat at the same restaurants, and before long, our brains stop noticing what's right in front of us.

The funny thing is, some of those overlooked places turn out to be hidden gems.

Here are five that might deserve a second look.

1. The Kalamazoo Institute of Arts

How many times have you driven past downtown Kalamazoo and thought, "I've really got to visit the KIA someday"?

For many of us, it's been on our mental list for years.

The museum features rotating exhibitions, Michigan artists, hands-on classes, and an impressive permanent collection. Even if you don't consider yourself an "art person," spending an hour wandering through the galleries can be surprisingly relaxing—and you might just discover a favorite artist you never knew existed.

2. Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery

Tucked just east of Kalamazoo, the Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery has been educating visitors for decades, yet many lifelong residents have never stopped.

It's a fascinating place to learn how Michigan raises fish for lakes and streams across the state. Families especially enjoy seeing the fish up close, and it's one of those outings that's both educational and unexpectedly fun.

3. Celery Flats Interpretive Center

Many people know Celery Flats because of the walking trails.

Far fewer have explored the historic buildings and interpretive center.

The site tells the story of Portage's agricultural roots, when celery farming helped shape the community we know today. It's a reminder that our area's history is richer than many of us realize.

4. Kleinstuck Preserve

Nestled right inside Kalamazoo is a peaceful natural area that somehow still feels like a secret.

Kleinstuck Preserve offers wooded trails, wetlands, birds, and wildflowers—all just minutes from busy streets. If you're looking for a quiet walk without driving across town, it's hard to beat.

5. The Air Zoo... Again

This one may sound strange.

Almost everyone knows about the Air Zoo.

But when was the last time you actually visited?

Many of us took our kids years ago and simply haven't been back.

The exhibits continue to evolve, and it's one of those attractions that's worth rediscovering as an adult.

Maybe that's the lesson in all of this.

Sometimes the best discoveries aren't found hundreds of miles away. Sometimes they're sitting just a few miles from home, quietly waiting for us to finally pull into the parking lot.

This week, I have a challenge for you.

Pick one place you've driven past countless times—but never stopped.

Pull in.

Walk around.

Spend thirty minutes exploring.

You might come away with a new appreciation for a place that had been hiding in plain sight all along.
