Quote Of The Day

"Keep your face always toward the sunshine - and shadows will fall behind you." - Walt Whitman

Construction projects across Kalamazoo and Portage are seeing noticeable slowdowns.

Locals have spotted stalled builds, lingering “coming soon” signs, and unfinished sites along major roads like Westnedge and Romence.

The driving force? Building material costs remain stubbornly high — not just lumber, but concrete, steel, electrical parts, and HVAC systems.

As expenses add up, developers are facing delays, reworking budgets, or even scaling back plans.

Some projects pause mid-way, others quietly push back openings — and increased costs often trickle down to local buyers and renters.

Still, demand remains steady: people want new places to eat, live, and gather.

It’s just taking more time — and more care — to bring those spaces to life in today’s climate.

When new doors finally open, there’s a bigger story behind the wait.

Parking is rarely the topic of everyday conversation, but it quietly shapes where locals choose to spend their time.

Before heading out, most people do a quick mental check: Will I find a spot nearby? Will it be more hassle than it's worth?

If parking feels unpredictable or like hard work, many simply pick another spot.

You can spot this pattern around town. Restaurants and shops with easy, visible parking tend to attract steady crowds, while those with complicated or limited options see uneven foot traffic.

It’s less about the walk, more about the friction: Locals are turned off by uncertainty about where to park, how long it’ll take, and whether it’ll be a stressful ordeal.

With busy lives and rising costs, people are quietly choosing what’s easiest — and parking is a bigger deciding factor than many realize.

Sometimes, it’s not the food or the vibe — it’s whether parking’s worth the hassle.

Car washes are popping up everywhere in Kalamazoo and Portage lately, with new builds and expansions easy to spot in busy areas.

These businesses have become an increasingly common sight thanks to membership models, steady year-round demand—especially during harsh Michigan winters—and lower staffing needs than traditional retailers.

It’s not just coincidence that so many are found where traffic is heavy and access is simple, often near grocery stores and gas stations where locals already stop for errands.

Convenience is key, making these locations ideal for residents always on the go.

Beyond clean cars, car washes represent a business model that scales easily, runs efficiently, and matches the way people move through their communities.

Keep an eye out—you may notice these sparkling new additions more than ever, showing just how business is shifting across the area.

More than 100 indoor and outdoor courts now dot the region, and new dedicated facilities—including large, year-round complexes—are opening regularly.

The sport’s appeal is unmistakable: it’s easy to learn, low-impact on the body, and social without being intimidating.

You’ll spot retirees filling courts in the morning, young professionals after work, and friends making pickleball a regular hangout.

Local parks like Ramona Park and 6th Street Park offer casual drop-in games, while places like Friendly Pickle create a welcoming, inclusive environment for newcomers year-round.

NEW RESTAURANTS

(What People Are Talking About)

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers

📍 6005 S Westnedge Ave (Portage)

Still the newest spot in the area drawing real crowds. Even weeks after opening, lines have been steady and curiosity hasn’t slowed down much. If you’ve driven by, you’ve probably seen it.

This is their first location in Southwest Michigan, and for a lot of people, it’s still on the “meaning to try it” list.

Worth noting: Simple menu, fast-moving line, and very consistent food—part of why it’s stayed busy.

Chick-fil-A (Gull Road Location)

📍 5802 Gull Rd (Kalamazoo)

A newer addition on the northeast side that’s still very much in the “new location” phase. While the brand isn’t new, this spot is—bringing more convenience to that side of town.

It’s been steadily busy since opening, especially during peak lunch and dinner hours.

Tip: Expect lines during rush times—it’s still getting a lot of attention.

RESTAURANT WATCH (Coming Soon)

Oya Sushi (New Asian Concept)

📍 Gull Road area

A new sushi/Asian restaurant has popped up on Gull Road, and people are starting to notice. No official opening date yet, but signage is up and it looks like progress is being made inside.

One to keep an eye on—could be a nice addition to that side of town.

Tequila’s Mexican Cantina (Portage Expansion)

📍 Near Crossroads Mall (Portage)

Another Mexican restaurant is getting close to opening in Portage. Details are still limited, but the location is set and it appears to be moving toward launch.

If you feel like there are a lot of new restaurant moves happening lately… you’re not wrong.
