Something interesting is happening lately around Kalamazoo and Portage:
People seem to be rediscovering simple entertainment again.
Pickleball courts are packed. Mini golf spots are getting busier. Walking trails are full again. Local markets, trivia nights, farmers markets, and casual outdoor events all seem to be drawing stronger crowds this spring.
And honestly, after the past few years, maybe that makes perfect sense. A lot of people appear to be shifting away from high-cost entertainment and looking for experiences that feel easier, more local, and less exhausting.
You can especially see it in the explosion of pickleball around Southwest Michigan. Courts that sat mostly empty a few years ago now regularly have wait times. Communities are adding courts. Beginners are showing up constantly. And unlike some activities, it spans almost every age group.
But it’s not just pickleball.
There’s also been renewed interest in things that used to feel almost old-fashioned:
Maybe part of it is financial. Maybe part is burnout from constantly being online.
Whatever the reason, Kalamazoo and Portage feel like they're leaning back into community-based entertainment in a big way lately.
And honestly?
That might be healthier than we realize. |
