AI Promised a 4-Day Workweek…

So Why Are Layoffs Still Happening?

If you’ve spent any time on LinkedIn or in business news lately, you’ve probably seen the bold prediction:

“AI is going to give us all a 4-day workweek.”

Sounds great, right?

Well… maybe not so fast.

Recent reporting from major outlets like Business Insider and The Guardian points to a different reality playing out across corporate America. While companies are investing heavily in artificial intelligence tools to boost productivity, many are also restructuring their workforce — and in some cases, reducing headcount.

In plain English?

AI isn’t just helping people work smarter… it’s changing who is doing the work.

Large organizations are beginning to automate repetitive tasks that were once handled by entry-level analysts, customer service reps, and back-office support teams. That’s leading to layoffs in some departments even as overall output increases. The assumption was that AI would free employees up for more meaningful work — and maybe even shorten the workweek — but in practice, it’s often being used to streamline operations and cut costs.

Now before you say, “That’s just big tech — what does that have to do with Kalamazoo or Portage?”…

Actually, quite a bit.

Local manufacturers, healthcare organizations, and even small professional service firms here in Southwest Michigan are starting to experiment with AI-driven scheduling, customer support tools, document automation, and analytics platforms. These tools can absolutely make businesses more competitive — especially in a tight labor market like ours.

But they also raise an important question:

Will AI allow local teams to focus on higher-value work… or will it quietly reduce the number of people needed to do the job?

For IT leaders, operations managers (service desk folks), and small business owners around Kazoo/Portage, this isn’t a future issue — it’s already knocking on the door. The organizations that thrive will likely be the ones who use AI not just to replace work, but to redefine it.

In other words, the 4-day workweek may still be possible someday…

But it’s going to take more than just new software to get us there.
