Is Kalamazoo Becoming a Boomerang City?

For years, it seemed like the story was always the same.....

For years, it seemed like the story was always the same.

Kids graduated from high school, headed off to college, and eventually built their lives somewhere else. Chicago. Grand Rapids. Indianapolis. Detroit. Maybe even farther.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. Exploring new places, building careers, and experiencing different communities can be incredibly valuable.

But lately, I've been hearing a different story.

People are coming back.

Not everyone, of course. But enough that it's becoming noticeable.

Some left twenty years ago and returned to be closer to aging parents. Others discovered that remote work allowed them to keep a big-city job while living somewhere with less traffic, lower housing costs, and a little more breathing room. Some simply reached a point where they wanted a different pace of life.

When people talk about what brought them back, the reasons are surprisingly similar.

Family tops the list.

Being able to attend a child's soccer game without sitting in traffic for an hour matters. Having grandparents nearby matters. Being close to lifelong friends matters.

Many also mention affordability. While housing costs have certainly risen in Southwest Michigan, they're still often more manageable than what many people encounter in larger metropolitan areas.

Then there's quality of life.

Within a short drive, residents can enjoy lakes, trails, parks, breweries, local restaurants, farmers markets, and a surprising amount of cultural activity. Kalamazoo and Portage may not have every amenity of a major city, but many returning residents say the trade-off is worth it.

Remote work has accelerated the trend.

A decade ago, many professionals had little choice about where they lived. If the job was in Chicago, you lived in Chicago. Today, technology has changed that equation for many workers. As long as there's a reliable internet connection, some jobs can be performed from almost anywhere.

That flexibility has allowed people to reconsider places they once left behind.

Of course, returning isn't always about economics or convenience.

Sometimes it's about rediscovering what made a place feel like home in the first place.

It's easy to overlook the strengths of a community when you've lived there your entire life. Sometimes it takes leaving to appreciate what you had.

The friendly conversations at local coffee shops. The familiar faces at community events. The ability to get almost anywhere in twenty minutes. The feeling that people still know their neighbors.

None of this means Kalamazoo and Portage are perfect. Every community has challenges and opportunities for improvement.

But perhaps one of the strongest endorsements a community can receive is when people who had every reason to leave decide to come back.

That raises an interesting question.

If you grew up here and left, would you ever return?

And if you already have, what brought you back?

I'd love to hear your story.
