Things quietly developing around Kalamazoo & Portage
Every so often we hear about something happening locally that isn’t making big headlines yet — but might soon. Here are a few things we’re keeping an eye on around town.
🍁 Canadiana Fest — A Festival Growing FastWhat started as a small celebration of Canadian culture is gaining traction in Southwest Michigan. Canadiana Fest, founded by local organizer Channon Russette Mondoux, blends live music, Canadian food, and charitable fundraising into a family-friendly event. Organizers say the festival has doubled in size each year as more people discover it. The next event is currently planned for September 20 at Arcadia Creek Festival Place, and if the growth trend continues, this could become one of the more unique cultural events in the Kalamazoo area.
🚧 Downtown Development MomentumSeveral redevelopment projects around downtown Kalamazoo are quietly moving forward behind the scenes. With continued investment in housing, entertainment, and public gathering spaces, city leaders are hoping to build more momentum that attracts residents and visitors year-round. It’s still early for some of these projects, but they’re worth watching as plans begin to take shape.
🌿 Portage Creek Restoration ProgressThe long-running Portage Creek restoration project continues to transform sections of the waterway back into a more natural habitat while also improving nearby public spaces. As new sections open and trails connect, the project is gradually creating a green corridor that could become one of the region’s most attractive outdoor recreation areas.
📰 KPVibe will keep an eye on these stories and share updates as they develop.
