Interesting Facts

Kalamazoo and Portage, Michigan sit side by side in southwest Michigan and together form one of the Midwest's most quietly surprising metro areas. Here are a few things most people never know about them:

  • A city with no zip code of its own: Portage, despite being Michigan's ninth-largest city by population, shares zip codes with Kalamazoo — meaning many Portage residents technically have a Kalamazoo mailing address, creating a persistent identity puzzle for locals and outsiders alike.
  • The anonymous scholarship that changed higher education: In 2005, an anonymous donor — later revealed to be a group of Kalamazoo civic leaders — launched the Kalamazoo Promise, guaranteeing free tuition at Michigan public universities for Kalamazoo Public Schools graduates. It became the national model for dozens of similar "promise" scholarship programs across the United States.

Kroger has purchased a vacant shopping center on South Westnedge Avenue in Portage, potentially bringing a new full-service grocery store to an area already served by Aldi and Fresh Thyme Market. The story explores what increased competition could mean for shoppers, neighboring businesses, and the future of this busy retail corridor. No official opening plans have been announced.
