The Asylum Lake "Off-Season" Secret
Most locals know Asylum Lake Preserve in Kalamazoo as a scenic summer walking spot, but the real insider move is visiting in late February or early March, just before the seasonal trails officially reopen. The frozen lake creates a mirror-flat expanse that reflects the bare tree line, and because foot traffic is almost nonexistent, you get the kind of eerie, cinematic stillness that landscape photographers drive hours to find — all within city limits, completely free, and usually totally empty. The hack within the hack: park on Howard Street near the western entrance rather than the main Parkview lot. Almost nobody uses it, meaning you'll rarely share the preserve with more than one or two other people even on a mild winter weekend. Locals call it a hidden front door that the WMU crowd hasn't caught onto yet. |
