Crews are now in the second phase of a major stream restoration at Milham Park, building on dam removal work that started in 2021.
The current effort focuses on restoring natural flow patterns in Portage Creek by clearing sediment and debris from the southern waterway section.
Early results from the 2021 dam removal show promise, with clearer water and improved fish habitat conditions.
State officials plan to stock the restored creek with trout, creating new fishing opportunities within city limits.
The three-week construction has temporarily closed the park's southern section, though visitors can still access trails from Lovers Lane and Kilgore Road entrances.
This $576,000 restoration received partial funding through a Michigan DNR Fisheries Habitat Grant.
Looking ahead, Kalamazoo secured a $500,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for 2026 improvements including parking lot renovation, accessible walkways, and creek observation decks.
The comprehensive project represents the first major upgrades in over two decades for this popular 49-acre recreational destination. Read More... |

Visitors can browse everything from brand-new 2026 models to paddleboards, custom decking, docks, and lifts across the spacious fairground facility.
The show opens Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.
Sunday concludes at 4 p.m., making it a perfect family weekend before school resumes.
