The Kalamazoo Companies Quietly Reaching the World

From medical technology and animal health to manufacturing and engineering, some of Southwest Michigan's biggest success stories are hiding in plain sight

When most people think about Kalamazoo and Portage, they think of great parks, local restaurants, craft beer, and maybe a few familiar employers. What many residents don't realize is that products used by millions of people around the world are being designed, manufactured, or supported right here in Southwest Michigan.

In fact, some of the area's biggest success stories are happening largely out of sight.

Take Stryker, for example. Headquartered in Kalamazoo, the medical technology company develops products used in hospitals across the globe. From surgical equipment and operating room technology to orthopedic implants, Stryker innovations help doctors treat patients every day. There's a good chance that someone you know has benefited from a product developed by a company based right here in Kalamazoo.

Animal lovers may be surprised to learn that Zoetis also maintains a major presence in the area. The company is one of the world's leading animal health businesses, producing medicines and vaccines used by veterinarians caring for pets, horses, cattle, and livestock around the world. Products connected to Kalamazoo operations help improve animal health in communities far beyond Michigan.

Then there's Landscape Forms, a company many residents have never heard of despite seeing its work all over the country. Based in Kalamazoo County, the company designs and manufactures outdoor furnishings, lighting, and streetscape elements used in parks, college campuses, downtown districts, and public gathering spaces nationwide. The next time you're visiting a major city, there's a decent chance you're sitting on a bench or walking through a plaza that includes products designed right here in Southwest Michigan.

And those are just the well-known examples.

The Kalamazoo region is also home to numerous manufacturers, engineering firms, technology companies, and specialty businesses that produce everything from industrial components and advanced materials to healthcare products and transportation equipment. Alongside major employers such as Stryker and Zoetis, companies including Parker Hannifin, Eaton, and Kalamazoo-based Humphrey Products help power industries across the globe. Many operate quietly behind the scenes, serving customers far beyond Southwest Michigan without ever becoming household names.

That's part of what makes the local economy unique.

Unlike communities that depend heavily on a single industry, Southwest Michigan benefits from a diverse mix of healthcare, manufacturing, education, research, and technology organizations. That diversity has helped the region navigate economic ups and downs while continuing to attract investment, talent, and new opportunities.

It's easy to overlook because most of these companies aren't consumer-facing. They don't have flashy storefronts. They aren't running national advertising campaigns. Yet every morning thousands of local residents head to work creating products, technologies, and services that impact people they've never met.

The next time you're driving past an industrial park, office complex, or manufacturing facility, remember that something important may be happening inside. The work being done there might help a surgeon in California, a veterinarian in Texas, or a city planner in New York.

For a community our size, that's pretty remarkable.

Sometimes the most interesting things about where we live are the things we rarely see.
