Across the area, high school robotics teams and STEM clubs are deep into build season. Whether it’s a FIRST Robotics team, a school maker space, or an after-school engineering club, these students aren’t just talking about artificial intelligence and automation — they’re designing it, testing it, and troubleshooting it in real time.

 

And if you’ve ever seen one of these labs in action, you know it’s not glamorous. It’s zip ties, laptops balanced on toolboxes, half-assembled frames, and a lot of “Wait… try that again.”

 

But it’s also teamwork. Leadership. Problem-solving under pressure.

While adults debate what large-scale tech development might mean for Portage’s future, these students are building the skills that will shape it.

 

They’re learning:

• How to collaborate

• How to iterate

• How to fail and fix

• How to think like engineers

 

And maybe most importantly — how to build something that didn’t exist yesterday.

 

It’s easy to imagine “AI” as something happening somewhere else. In Silicon Valley. In giant data centers. In rooms full of PhDs.

 

But sometimes it’s happening right here.

• In a classroom after school.
• In a converted workshop.
• In a lab that smells faintly like solder.

 

The future isn’t just being debated in council chambers.

It’s being assembled with Allen wrenches.
