10 Things Every Kalamazoo & Portage Resident Should Do This Summer

Summer in Southwest Michigan has a way of flying by.

Summer in Southwest Michigan has a way of flying by.

One minute you're celebrating Memorial Day and the next you're

wondering how Labor Day arrived so quickly.

That's why we put together a simple challenge for KP Vibe readers: How many of these local experiences can you check off before summer ends?

Start with a walk or bike ride along the Portage Creek Bicentennial Trail. Stretching through parks, neighborhoods, and natural areas, it's one of the community's best ways to enjoy a summer evening.

Spend a day exploring the Air Zoo. Even longtime residents are often surprised by how much there is to see, from historic aircraft to interactive exhibits and flight simulators.

Visit the Kalamazoo Nature Center and take a trail you've never explored before. Summer is one of the best times to experience the area's forests, wetlands, and wildlife.

Catch a sunset at Ramona Park. It's one of those simple local experiences that reminds you why people love living here.

Browse the Kalamazoo Farmers Market and pick up something you've never tried before. Beyond produce, you'll find baked goods, local vendors, flowers, specialty foods, and plenty of people-watching.

Take a trip to the Gilmore Car Museum. Whether you're a car enthusiast or not, the collection and campus are impressive enough to make it a worthwhile afternoon.

Enjoy an outdoor concert. From Bell's Beer Garden performances to local community events, summer music seems to pop up everywhere.

Try a restaurant you've never visited before. New dining options continue to appear throughout Kalamazoo and Portage, making this challenge easier every year.

Spend an afternoon on the water. Whether it's kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply relaxing by the lake, summer and Southwest Michigan are meant to go together.

Finally, play tourist in your own hometown. Visit a shop you've never entered. Walk a trail you've never explored. Attend an event you've never considered before.

It's surprisingly easy to fall into routines and miss what makes our community special.

Summer doesn't last forever.

Maybe this year is a good time to see a little more of the place we call home.

How many of these can you check off before Labor Day?
