Portage Residents to Vote on Single-Hauler Trash Collection System

Special Election Scheduled for May 5, 2026, Amid Community Debate

Portage residents are set to decide the future of their city's waste management system in a special election on May 5, 2026.

This vote follows the City Council's approval of a five-year, $29 million contract with Waste Management in July 2025, designating them as the sole provider for trash, recycling, and yard waste services.

The decision to move to a single-hauler system has sparked significant debate within the community.

Supporters argue that consolidating services under one provider will lead to cost savings for residents and reduce wear and tear on city streets by minimizing the number of heavy trucks in operation.

Opponents, however, contend that this move eliminates consumer choice and could negatively impact local businesses.

In response to these concerns, the grassroots organization Take Back the Trash successfully gathered over 4,000 signatures, surpassing the required 1,308, to bring the issue to a public vote.

As a result, the City Council approved the special election, allowing residents to have the final say on whether to proceed with the single-hauler system or revert to the previous model of multiple waste service providers.

Mayor Patricia Randall acknowledged the community's concerns and emphasized the importance of the upcoming vote in determining the city's direction on waste management.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the election to ensure their voices are heard on this pivotal issue.

For more information on the upcoming election and the proposed waste management changes, residents can contact the City Clerk’s Office.
