If You Had One Weekend to Show Off Kalamazoo...

Imagine this....

Imagine this....

Your phone rings on a Thursday afternoon.

A good friend you haven't seen in years says, "I'm going to be in Kalamazoo this weekend. You've got two days to convince me why you love living there."

Where do you take them?

It's a fun question because it forces you to look at your hometown through fresh eyes.

When we live somewhere long enough, we stop noticing the things that visitors immediately see. We get caught in routines—driving the same roads, eating at the same restaurants, shopping at the same stores—and before long, we forget just how much our community has to offer.

So I started putting together my own "perfect Kalamazoo weekend."

Friday evening begins with dinner at a favorite locally owned restaurant. It almost doesn't matter which one. Part of what makes Southwest Michigan special is the incredible variety of locally owned places that each have their own personality.

After dinner, we'd head downtown.

Maybe there's live music.

Maybe it's Beats on Bates.

Maybe it's a walk through Bronson Park or simply wandering downtown with an ice cream cone, enjoying the energy of a summer evening.

Saturday starts with coffee from a local café before spending the morning at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market or exploring one of our community markets. It's not just about buying fresh produce—it's about talking with local vendors, discovering something homemade, and slowing down enough to enjoy the experience.

From there, we'd head to the Air Zoo or the Gilmore Car Museum, depending on what our guests enjoy most. Both are attractions that people travel hundreds of miles to visit, yet many locals haven't experienced them in years.

Lunch might be followed by a walk through the Kalamazoo Nature Center, a bike ride on the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, or simply finding a quiet place along one of our lakes.

No rushing.

No packed schedule.

Just enough time to appreciate where we are.

As the sun begins to set, we'd point the car west.

One of the great advantages of living here is that Lake Michigan is only about an hour away. There's something unforgettable about ending the day watching the sun disappear over the water—a reminder that some of the Midwest's most beautiful scenery is practically in our backyard.

By Sunday morning, we'd probably find ourselves talking less about attractions and more about the feeling of the weekend.

The friendly conversations.

The tree-lined neighborhoods.

The parks.

The pace.

The sense of community.

Because if I'm being honest, I don't think people fall in love with

Kalamazoo because of one particular place.

They fall in love with how it feels.

It's a community that's big enough to offer plenty to do, yet small enough that life still feels personal.

You can spend the morning hiking a wooded trail, the afternoon at a world-class museum, the evening listening to live music, and still be home before bedtime.

Not every city can say that.

So now it's your turn.

If someone gave you one weekend to show off Kalamazoo and Portage...

Where would you take them?

I'd love to hear your itinerary.

Who knows? You might inspire someone else to rediscover a favorite place—or finally visit one that's been on their list for years.
