Remember when buying music meant actually going to a store? |
If you were really lucky, you'd find that one album you'd been hunting for.... |

You'd wander the aisles, flip through CDs, check out the album covers, and maybe discover something you didn't even know you wanted.
And if you were really lucky, you'd find that one album you'd been hunting for.
Well, dust off your CD collection, because a little piece of that experience may be coming back to Portage.
Disc Replay Is Heading to South Westnedge Disc Replay, a retailer specializing in used entertainment and collectibles, is reportedly planning a new location at 6800 S. Westnedge Avenue, Suite H, in Carillon Centre.
The store buys and sells things like video games, gaming consoles, DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, and collectibles.
The reported goal is to open before the end of 2026, although an official opening date hasn't been confirmed.
For longtime Kalamazoo-area residents, it's a reminder of when entertainment came in a box, a case, or a sleeve instead of appearing on your phone.
There's Something About Owning the Real Thing Streaming is convenient. No argument there.
But there's something satisfying about holding an album, reading the liner notes, or browsing a shelf of movies and games. And unlike a streaming subscription, that favorite CD doesn't disappear because somebody changed a licensing agreement.
The same goes for video games. Some older consoles and games have developed devoted followings, with collectors searching for titles they played years ago.
Maybe it's nostalgia. Maybe it's the thrill of finding something unexpected. Or maybe some of us just miss the days when you could lend a friend a movie without giving them your password!
The Treasure-Hunt Factor One of the fun things about secondhand entertainment stores is that you never know what you'll find.
A game you haven't seen in 20 years. A classic movie you forgot you loved. A vinyl album with cover art that's practically a work of art.
And sometimes, a bargain that makes the whole trip worthwhile.
For younger shoppers, physical media can be something new and interesting. For the rest of us, it's a trip down memory lane.
Either way, it's encouraging to see another business potentially joining the South Westnedge shopping corridor.
Now Here's a Question... If Disc Replay opens in Portage, what would YOU go looking for first?
Your favorite childhood video game? A long-lost CD? A classic movie on DVD?
Or are you one of those people who still has an entire collection tucked away in the basement?
Come on, KP Vibe readers. We know some of you still have those CD towers!
Tell us what you'd love to find. And bonus points if you remember the first album you ever bought! |

Love this! Physical copies just hit different, you know? Streaming always loses my favorite movies. If I find the Spice Girls album, it’s coming straight home with me. Also, anyone else remember burning mix CDs for friends? Simpler times.
You're so right, nothing compares to the feeling of owning your favorites (and yes, burning mix CDs for friends was pure magic). Here’s hoping Disc Replay stocks some Spice Girls nostalgia!
Honestly, hoping they carry some weird B-movies or maybe Star Wars on VHS. Yes, I still have a VCR! This store sounds awesome for us collectors. Might finally find that one Mystery Science Theater box set I’ve been missing.
We hope Disc Replay brings exactly that kind of quirky treasure hunting, B-movies, Star Wars on VHS, and all! Good luck tracking down that elusive Mystery Science Theater box set.
Jesse S.Same here, Jesse. There’s nothing like rewinding a tape and hoping it still works! I’d love to see some X-Files or weird cult horror stuff on the shelves too. Hope they stock up on the classics.
My teen calls my CD rack ‘vintage’ but I never let her touch my Goo Goo Dolls collection. Might just dig them out and see what the new Disc Replay has for old-school concerts on DVD! Anyone else buy their first album at the old Musicland in the mall?
carolyn_84I totally remember Musicland! That’s where I got my first Britney Spears CD. Old-school concerts on DVD would be amazing. My kids always laugh at my wall of Jewel and Counting Crows.
We love that you’re keeping your Goo Goo Dolls collection safe, and you’re not alone in remembering Musicland! Hunting for concert DVDs at Disc Replay could be the perfect way to revisit those 'vintage' favorites.
This makes me miss Saturday mornings at Blockbuster. I’d love to find the original Halo on Xbox again. My nieces don’t even know what a game disc is! Happy to see a place that gets both the thrill of the hunt and the fun of sharing with friends.
It’s wonderful to hear so many Blockbuster memories, Disc Replay aims to capture that same spirit, whether you're searching for Halo or swapping finds with friends. Who knows, maybe your nieces will join you for their first game hunt!
I still have a binder full of CDs I made back in high school, will definitely be checking out the store to see if I can track down my old Matchbox Twenty album. Funny how much those album covers stick in your mind. Anyone else remember the thrill of picking one out for a road trip?
Those old album covers really do stick with you, and there's something special about flipping through CDs before a big road trip. Hope you track down that Matchbox Twenty CD at the new store!
